benefits of therapeutic riding

The benefits of equine assisted activities are as numerous as the types of disabilities served. Research shows that students who participate in therapeutic riding experience physical, emotional, and mental rewards. The horse’s rhythmic movements, sense of strength, warmth and three dimensional movement provide soothing healthy exercise while improving circulation, muscle tone, and posture. Working with horses is a discipline that fosters increased self esteem and feelings of self sufficiency. The bonding that occurs between horse and rider helps to reduce anxieties, encourages interaction and offers a place where riders can feel a sense of empowerment. The therapeutic qualities of   horseback riding are recognized by many medical professional including the American Physical Therapy Association and the American Occupational Therapy Association.

The relationship between horse and rider is typically one of deep trust and affection strengthened by touch as the client learns to groom and care for the horse. Experiencing the repetition of the horse’s stride, the rider’s back and trunk muscles are stimulated into action, bringing life to many nerve patterns formally dormant. Absorbing this rhythm into hips and pelvis helps tight ligaments relax and become supple. Through the rider’s reaction and adjustment to the movements of the horse, which mimic a human’s walking stride, we see improvements in strength, co-ordination and balance.
